Windermere Lake Cruises

There is no better way to take in the breathtaking scenery of the Lake District than embarking on a Lake Windermere cruise. With sailings, all year round you can hop on the boat at Ambleside Pier and best of all dogs are allowed on the boats, too (not the nighttime dining cruises)

Fido will get his own ticket, and there are several places on the shores of Lake Windermere where you can disembark and enjoy a leisurely stroll. Check out Claife Viewing Station, Explore Bowness on Windermere and don't forget your camera for all those selfies.

The Armitt

Opened in 1912, this hidden gem in Ambleside is dog friendly and well worth a visit; combining an art gallery, library and museum, you can view a collection of watercolours and first edition books by its most famous advocate Beatrix Potter.

The library is jam-packed with books and documents telling the social history of the Lake District National Park. There are works by local authors including John Ruskin, Miss Potter herself and Kurt Schwitters, who spent his last years in Ambleside. There is also an art and activity area for kids and adults alike to get creative.

Ambleside Roman Fort

Another little known dog-friendly attraction in the area is the Ambleside Roman Fort, nestled on the shores of Lake Windermere in Borran's field. These 2nd Century remains offer the chance to step back in time and learn a little about Roman times.

The Fort is thought to have been built by Hadrian, who also commissioned the famous wall. Not much remains of the courtyard, treasury and administrative offices, but the layout is still visible, and something history buffs will appreciate. It's definitely worth a visit with your best friend and there are lots of scenic walks to enjoy nearby.
