Things To Do in Backworth

Going by the upmarket new builds in this pretty village, it might come as a surprise that it has an illustrious history dating back to Roman times. A hoard of gold and silver objects were found in 1812 consisting of a skillet, silver-gilt trumpet brooches, rings, bracelets, chains with wheel-shaped pendants, spoons, a white bronze mirror, and coins of 140AD emperor Antoninus Pius. West Backworth is a deserted medieval village and a walk with the dogs to an open field south of Backworth Lane will take you to the site where there is a trace of a two-row village plan. You can find out more about the area’s history if you visit the Backworth Social Club on Station Road. It is open in the evenings from Monday to Friday and from about noon on Saturdays and Sundays.

In keeping with the Roman theme, a day out at the Segedunum Roman Fort, a 12-minute drive from Backworth, promises a fun-filled family day out. It is the most excavated fort along Hadrian’sWall and features a 35m observation tower with views across the World Heritage Site. It also has an interactive museum and a Roman Garden and Colliery.

What would a family holiday be without a trip to the seaside? If you are at the cottage in Backworth, then you won’t have far to go to one of the best beaches in the area, with Whitley Bay just more than four miles away. This Blue Flag Award beach is an expanse of golden sand with crystal clear water that stretches for two miles from St Mary’s Island to Cullercoats. The seafront offers a good selection of cafes and amusement arcades.

Last Word

Attention to detail abounds in this generously proportioned home from the gated driveway to the décor. There is no chance of getting under each other’s feet if you choose this village gem. There are two reception rooms, one with an open fire, the other with a log burner and both with TVs. The kitchen overlooks the dining area meaning the designated chef won’t be excluded from the rest of the party. There are no clunky white appliances in this bespoke kitchen because the utility room has all that and even comes with an additional sink.

It is the main bedroom with the real wow factor with its draped four-poster bed and a thoroughly modern en suite shower room. There is an additional double and a twin, and the third bedroom is ideal for the younger set having a double bed with a bunk above.

There is so much to do in and around Backworth and you can get to know the locals of this former mining village at the nearby social club. If it’s a combination of country, coast and city slicking that would suit you and your group, then it’s a no-brainer where your next holiday destination is going to be.
