Things To Do in South Shields

You will be within walking distance of South Shields’ fabulous Blue Flag Beach at the mouth of the Tyne facing North Shields across the river. If you have children in tow, you will have no choice but to set some time aside for the Ocean Beach Pleasure Park. There are rollercoasters, a giant inflatable beach slide, a pirate ship, dodgems and carousels, as well as the Urban Wave, great for budding surfers. The seafront fun continues in the arcades with laser mazes, bowling and a smuggler-themed adventure golf course.

Away from the thrills and spills is Sandhaven Beach starting at the South Tyne Pier, traced by high dunes and vast enough to feel remote even in high season. It is a Blue Flag beach, and it is perfect for the kids to build sandcastles, the pooches to paddle in the clean water and the whole family to explore its rock pools. There are RNLI lifeguards from the end of May to the beginning of September and if the conditions are right, you could sign up for a surf lesson or two.

For a slice of ancient history, visit the Arbeia Fort at the mouth of the Tyne. It is the most excavated Roman military supply base in the country; dating back to 160AD; it was the supply depot for all 17 forts along Hadrian’s Wall. Excavations in the 1800s revealed the commander’s house and barracks, which form part of this unique museum.

Last Word

This break need not be all about rollercoasters and arcades because South Shields has managed to capture the true essence of its past. An integral part of the seafront is a pair of Victorian parks. The South Marine Park has a miniature railway and boating lake and a bandstand that hosts concerts during the summer and the Proms in the Park in July. The quieter North Marine Park stretches up to the Roman Fort and has a commanding view of the river and North sea, and it has bowls and petanque facilities.

Fish and chips or a curry at one of the famous Indian restaurants on Ocean Road provide a real treat for the family, or you can pack a picnic and head for the farthest part of the beach and lay down your blanket on the golden sand.

The spacious first-floor apartment has room enough for five guests, ideal for families and a cot is available on request. The eat-in kitchen has all you need to prepare homecooked meals and the convenience stores are within walking distance so that you can stock up on supplies.

Family fun is what Harthaven is all about and it is an ideal base to explore a part of our coastline that is full of surprises for all ages, from history to high-flying funfair rides.
