Things To Do in Alnwick

Virtually on your doorstep is the iconic centuries’ old pub Dirty Bottles in Narrowgate. You can sip on your Lindisfarne Iced Tea cocktail, or a Percy Sour made with Glen Aln whisky or chance Ye Olde Curse, so-called after the legend of how Dirty Bottles got its name. On its sun terrace overlooking the castle or in its characterful flag-stoned interior with an open fire, you will learn of the curse of the dirty bottles that remained sealed between two windows and have been untouched in 200 years.

Once you’ve had a guided tour of the majestic Alnwick Castle that is the seat of the 12th Duke of Northumberland and a location for the Harry Potter films, set aside a few more hours to explore its 12 acres of multi-award-winning gardens, incredibly fascinating is the Poison Garden that plays host to hundreds of toxic shrubs and trees. The gardens are home to the world’s largest Tai Haku Cherry Orchard and the world’s largest Treehouse Restaurant, with views of the Grand Cascade comprising 120 water jets.

The beach, however, is sure to be the main focus of your stay. Just a few minutes drive from Yule House; you are on one of the country’s best stretches of golden sand. Pack the beach games and windbreakers provided in the storage shed of the house and a picnic packed with local produce from the shops on your doorstep and experience the irresistible charms of Alnmouth Beach, four miles from East Alnwick.

Last Word

This period property in one of the most enchanting towns in Northumberland will provide a holiday like no other. When would you have the opportunity of being the next-door neighbour of a duke and duchess or look out of the window from the eat-in kitchen and watch the hustle and bustle of the market town?

You have walks and cycling routes aplenty through woodland, up and over crags, and coastal trails that teem with birdlife. There are 12 acres of Alnwick Castle’s gardens to explore and in the shadow of the castle, you can stock up on local produce such as Turnbull’s speciality pork pies, said to be the best in the area. You are unlikely to resist popping into Marilyn and Melrose, a shop over two floors on Narrowgate that stocks everything from St Eval candles to Annie Sloane chalk paint.

The interior of this Grade II townhouse is faultless, with its sweeping staircase leading up to two floors to the spacious bedrooms and a large bathroom which has both a walk-in shower and bath. Not only is there a sitting room but a garden room too that leads out to a covered and well-lit strip that is great for alfresco sundowners or an early morning coffee.
