Things To Do in Bamburgh

Even though the lodge is in the Northumberland countryside, the coast is within walking distance with Bamburgh’s vast expanse of unspoilt sands. With its majestic castle dominating the shoreline, this is a beachcomber’s paradise. If you’ve always dreamt about doing a “hang ten”, then book a surfing lesson on this beach that has some of the most consistent waves in the UK.

Opposite are the Farne Islands and leaving from nearby Seahouses are a variety of boat tours that include a sunset cruise. Once home to hermits and monks in the 7th century, these trips to the islands open-plan now play host to puffins and colonies of grey seals.

Bamburgh Castle is well worth a visit and the younger set who are Horrible Histories crazy will enjoy the extensive collection of armour. The country’s oldest inhabited castle, dating back 1,400 years and is set on nine acres of an outcrop, offers views miles out to sea. The State Rooms and King’s Hall are full of history and afterwards, you can have a refreshing cuppa in the Clocktower Tearoom or the dog-friendly Tack Room Café.

Six miles along the beach or 20 miles by road is Holy Island, otherwise known as Lindisfarne, where St Cuthbert’s chapel is set between charming coastal cottages leading down to its shores. Visit St Aidan’s Winery and stock up on a few bottles of fruit wine such as elderflower, rhubarb and damson. Remember to check the tide table if you plan to go by car because the causeway is impassable at high tide.
