Things To Do in Beadnell

Once you’ve started your day off with a cup of coffee on the patio, then there is no need to slave over the stove preparing breakfast because the Salt Water Café is just down the drag. Here you can enjoy a full English or, in keeping with your surroundings, try the smoked haddock kedgeree or a classic Northumbrian breakfast of kippers with lemon and dill butter. The café is also open for lunches, afternoon teas, and dinner. The same owners have the Craster Arms, which is packed with original features from its beamed vaulted ceilings, exposed stone walls and inglenook with a roaring open fire. The pub is family and pet-friendly and it is not unusual to see pooches warming their paws beside the fire when it’s chilly. It has quiz nights every Wednesday and the beer garden plays host to live music and the pub’s “Crastonbury” Festival over the August bank holiday when the revelry goes on until the wee hours.

Beadnell Bay is the only west-facing harbour in England, making for a romantic sunset walk along the beach. Factor in the time the sun sets and set off along Harbour Road that runs parallel to the sea and keep walking until you reach the beach that stretches for two miles. Weather permitting, this walk is so romantic; it is the perfect time for a marriage proposal; just don’t forget to pack the Prosecco.

If you are up for trying something different, Beadnell Bay plays host to some great surfing with swells reaching 15 feet beyond the shore. Hire a wet suit and a board and a two-hour lesson will show you “pop up” techniques that could get you riding the waves closer to the shoreline.

Last Word

Beadnell has enough delights to keep you occupied during your stay and Rock Rose is where you can be sure your accommodation lives up to its location. It is understandable if you don’t venture further afield during your stay, but the allure of other activities beyond the bay is likely to draw you in.

Seahouses is only a four-minute drive from the cottage or an hour walk along the beach. There are regular boat trips to the Farne Islands from its working harbour that are a must-see for any nature lover. The boats, some catamarans, others restored RNLI lifeboats go around the islands that are home to 84,000 puffins, guillemots, razorbills and kittiwakes, just to name a few. There is Serenity’s two-hour Sunset Cruise for diehard romantics for an unsurpassed view of the sun setting over Bamburgh Castle.

Rock Rose is in a location quiet enough to hear the waves from the comfort of your bedroom, yet not too remote to distance you from the heart of the village. Locals and visitors mingle in the pub and the historic harbour and award-winning beach is just a short walk away.
