Things To Do in Allendale

With silver and lead ore running through its rivers, it is clear why Allendale literally means “valley of the shining water”. You have to visit this charming town during your holiday, with its artists’ studios and even a Sci-fi museum. For a pint of local ale and a good dollop of local hospitality, the Allendale Inn has atmosphere in bucket loads. The sign says “families, dogs and muddy boots are welcome”, and here you can sit in front of the cast iron range set into the inglenook and get to know the regulars.

Allendale has been home to the Tar Bar’l festival since 1858, one of the best New Year celebrations in the region and the May Fair and numerous folk festivals pay tribute to the valley’s heritage.

Walks along the East and West Allen rivers are popular and the area is renowned for its trout and salmon fishing. Visitors to the area should wake up before sunrise at least one day of their stay to experience the blazing horizon and to stay out after dusk to see the best night skies in England for themselves. Northumberland’s internationally recognised Dark Sky Park gives new meaning to stargazing. The entire Northumberland National Park and most of the Kielder Water and Forest Park are where visitors see the Milky Way and the Andromeda Galaxy with the naked eye.

For family fun, there are pony trekking days and the Hexham is just eight miles from Allendale where you can tour the old gaol and abbey and the Vindolanda, a Roman army museum.

Last Word

Isaac’s cottage is in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and from your hot tub, you will see the night sky as you have never seen before. A cottage with all the modern conveniences, it’s original features will give you a taste of what the area is all about.

After a soak in the hot tub, wrap up warm and take to the comfy seating in the summerhouse to enjoy a sundowner or sit at the table to enjoy your meals alfresco. Indoors it is all oil central heated and of course, there is the option of a large roaring fire to create that extra bit of cosy atmosphere.

The bedrooms are all on the first floor and if you want to spend a bit of quiet time away from the others, there is a second seating area on the landing. There is no need to go too far afield to watch the footy or Formula 1 because this holiday comes with a complete Sky package.

The eat-in farmhouse kitchen has everything you need to rustle up a full English breakfast and a meal for the five of you at dinner time. On your visit to Allendale or Hexham, make sure you pop into the butchers and artisan bakers to stock up on local produce.
