What to Expect

A driveway approaches this high spec holiday accommodation with space for three cars. In a rural location, it is a recently converted barn near the village of Witton Gilbert, only three miles from Durham.

You are welcome to bring up to three pets and there is an enclosed lawned garden to give them some outdoor space. Attention to detail goes as far as underfloor heating and Smart TVs in all three bedrooms.

When you are not enjoying a meal alfresco on the patio or having a good soak in the hot tub, there are excellent walking and cycling trails on the North Pennines, an AONB on your doorstep.

About Ness Cottage

All on the ground floor, underfloor heating throughout, the three bedrooms, one en suite, that sleep six lead off the main area. The family bathroom has a tub and walk-in shower.

The kitchen has a large range cooker with a gas hob, there is a dining table for six and the sitting room has a Chilli Penguin wood burner with an oven. There are Smart TVs in all three bedrooms and there is a built-in flat screen in the living area.

It has double sliding doors leading to the outside, where there is a hot tub, patio dining furniture, a BBQ and an enclosed lawned garden.

Things To Do in Witton Gilbert

Despite the rural location, there are two pubs and a shop in the charming village of Witton Gilbert. The Traveller’s Rest has lunch and dinner menus, with a steak night on a Thursday and Sunday roasts are served from midday to 8pm. It is Cask Marque approved, so you will be sure that its quality beer from grain to glass.

The best way to get to know the area is to join the Witton Gilbert Walking group meeting at Cooper Hall every Tuesday morning. There is no fee to become a guest of this group with a number of walks that include one that actually ends at Lodge Farm, where you will be staying. The 4.75-mile ramble starts at Coach Lane and takes in St Michael and All Angels church with its Commonwealth War graves. Part of the route is along a disused railway track and when you have reached your destination, you will be treated to a stunning view of Witton Gilbert and Browney Valley. The heights beyond your holiday home are close to the boundary of the medieval Beaurepaire Estate belonging to the Priors of Durham Cathedral. For bird lovers, skylark and lapwing are frequently seen on the hill and look out for dipper, kingfisher, otter and feral mink in the River Wear below.

Walk or cycle the three miles to the historic city of Durham with its iconic Norman cathedral and visit the botanical gardens and the 13th-century manor house Crook Hall with its award-winning gardens.
