Things To Do in Pickering

Take a peaceful stroll with the dog into Pickering, a charming place oozing with original character, and follow the Pickering Beck along its north to south path through the town. You’ll soon come across the Beck Isle Museum, a unique – and very dog-friendly – attraction where people live Victorian lives, from the blacksmith to the dispenser, gentleman’s draper and more. The modern town itself retains its unique character while being very much up to date. Enjoy a romantic meal or drink before shopping for something special.

The North York Moors are all around, so take a short drive in almost any direction and start enjoying the winding paths, moorland hills and woodlands teeming with wildlife, all of which the dog will find extremely interesting. For a special moorland visit, hop on the North Yorkshire Moors heritage steam Railway. For a romantic view of superb upland scenery, there is nothing to beat this train ride. Made famous by Harry Potter and Heartbeat, much of the scenery, towns and villages will be familiar. Get off at one of the characterful stops like Grosmont and Goathland, and leave the modern world behind.

As well as the walks, hikes, bike and horse rides all across the moors, to the east lies the North Yorkshire and Cleveland Heritage Coast, where you can spend your days walking or photographing the dramatic waterfalls and historic ruins. Here you’ll also find the superb coastal resorts of Whitby, Scarborough and Filey, which should suit whatever mood takes you.

Keep up the relaxed feeling with a walk by the river, then get involved in the town’s history and culture, which is sure to inspire you. Let the dog follow its nose into the town’s old streets, especially when the markets are on, and partake of the very best in Yorkshire food, drink, crafts and hospitality. From here, it’s off onto the North York Moors, a dramatic landscape that inspired the Brontes and is crisscrossed by rivers and nature trails for all to enjoy.

Don’t miss the chance of a train ride on the steam railway, and mix things up a little with a trip to the beautiful North Yorkshire coast. With miles of sandy beaches as well as wild moorland to explore, this is a great place to let the imagination run wild, as well as the dog.
