Things To Do in pickering

There’s a choice to make as soon as you step onto the street from this charming cottage. With a pub a couple of hundred yards away and a shop a little further, Pickering awaits with all its charm. With lots of eateries, independent shops and a weekly market to choose from, this lovely town is worth a visit in its own right.

Take a stroll by the Pickering Beck river in the centre of town, and maybe explore the living Beck Isle Museum for a taste of what life was like here in Victorian times.

A large part of that experience is still here, thanks to the North Yorkshire Moors heritage railway, which is right across the road from the cottage. Pulled by working steam locomotives, you can enjoy a trip into the heart of the North York Moors National Park, and there’s even a Pullman diners’ car service if you fancy a special meal while admiring the superb countryside. Along the way, you’ll notice Goathland, home of tv’s Heartbeat, and locations used in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.

The train runs services to Whitby, a lovely seaside town with gothic connections thanks to its 7th century Abbey, inspiration for Bram Stoker to write Dracula. A short drive south from Pickering also takes you to the historic and beautiful city of York, which has a high path based on its Roman wall, and lots of visitor attractions themed around its time as the Viking capital of England. There’s also lots of superb shopping, eating, drinking and shows to enjoy while you’re there.

Last Word

This is a truly unique holiday cottage that will especially appeal to lovers of history and heritage, as well as anyone who appreciates unspoilt nature. With the steam locomotives easing their way into the sidings across the road, you’re sure to want to take a trip or two to find out where they lead. This is into the North York Moors National Park, with hundreds of miles of walks and rivers to explore and historical sites such as Castle Howard and several other National Trust properties and nature reserves.

If it’s the coast you’re looking for, either a train journey or a half-hour drive eastward takes you to the delights of the Heritage coast, which you can enjoy from cliff top-level or down on the superb sandy beaches.

Also here are Whitby, Robin Hood’s Bay, Scarborough and Filey so that you can mix healthy seaside walks with bird watching, fish and chips and a great British day out by the sea.

For more culture and history, York is also a short drive away and is part of the East Coast Mainline railway, not to mention centuries of history and one of the best shopping experiences in England. Head back into Pickering and enjoy its timeless feel (and maybe something nice to eat and drink), then home to a superb stone cottage, open fire or sit out on the patio.
