Things To Do in pickering

Take a short walk from the front door and enjoy Pickering, a thriving but unspoilt market town where you can eat, drink, rest and pick up lots of lovely local provisions, from meat to preserves, to help your holiday along. Visit Pickering Castle, a dog-friendly attraction dating back to the 13th century with a gift shop and superb views of the moors outside the town. Take in the Beck Isle Museum, a living environment taking you into the history of Pickering, with its blacksmith, barbers shop, drapers and many other traditional activities.

Head for the steam railway station, which is worth a visit in its own right, and take a trip on the North Yorkshire Moors Steam Railway, from where you’ll see rolling hills as far as the eye can see and villages and towns made famous in Heartbeat and Harry Potter. Whether by loco or car, don’t miss the beautiful towns of Helmsley, Kirkbymoorside and Malton. Get off or park up and explore the North York Moors National Park, home to hundreds of miles of walks, trails and cycle paths which the dogs will love, not to mention rare wildlife for the nature lover.

Take the train (or drive) over to Whitby, home to the famous Abbey, which inspired Bram Stoker to write Dracula, and roam the Heritage Coast with its miles of sandy beaches and clifftop walks. Try Scarborough, which combines traditional seaside attractions with cable car rides and the superb Alpamare Water Park, for a memorable day out.

Last Word

This characterful, charming cottage is a beautiful place to spend some quality time together, accompanied by some extra, four-legged guests to make it even more special. Its original features take you back in time and away from modern stresses, while the covered courtyard where the coach horses used to rest up adds to the atmosphere. Here you can enjoy an alfresco breakfast before heading into town, or some late drinks and maybe a spot of supper before bed.

The charm continues in Pickering, home to hundreds of years of history, including its stunning castle, as well as the smells and flavours of fresh local food and drink.

Take in the town from the heights of the castle, or get into character with the dogs at your feet at the Beck Isle Museum. The steam railway will help the adventure along, or you can jump into the car with the dogs and you’ll soon be in the heart of the North York Moors.

From the quiet walks, dramatic moorland scenery and beautiful towns and villages of the Moors, you’re also right next to the coast, which makes for a day out in its own right. The whole area is so full of excellent choices that you’re sure to return home in the evenings very contented and eager for more of the same tomorrow.
