Things To Do in Pickering

You’ll be able to hear the steam locomotive chuffing away across the road, so you’re likely to want to cross over with the dog and head for a trip onto the North York Moors. This is where Harry Philosopher’s Stone was partly set, and there is a Hogwarts scarf and magnifying glass in one of the bedrooms. Enjoy the ride northwards towards Goathland and Grosmont, with stunning views over the Rye and Esk valleys. Hop off at one of the stops for some refreshments, or head down into one of the beautiful moorland villages and towns like Helmsley for a real feast.

Back in Pickering, adults, kids and dogs will love the old streets and shops, selling some very find local craftwork as well as delicious food and drink. Try the weekly market on a Monday for even more choice (at great prices), and if you can, arrange a stay which includes the first Thursday of the month for the farmers’ market. Visit Beck Isle living Victorian museum, or try some trout fishing in the beck itself.

Take a short drive to Dalby Forest Outdoor Pursuit Centre, which has a paintballing and airsoft centre to please the young and young at heart. Visit Flamingo Land theme park and zoo near the lovely moorland town of Malton, or the Ryedale Folk Museum in Hutton-le-Hole, a tremendous dog-friendly day out among living recreations of this remarkable part of Yorkshire stretching back from the Iron Age to the rock n roll years of 1950s Britain.

Last Word

Old, young and doggie will love the comfort and freedom of this cottage, and two and four-legged guests alike will appreciate the coal effect, natural flame gas fires in the sitting room and kitchen. Of course, fantasy is never far away in a cottage with this name, and you’ll want to dash across the road to board a real steam train to take you to real and imaginary destinations, all set against a breathtaking moorland landscape which many would say is arguably better than the Dales.

Whether you want to stop off in (or even drive to) lovely towns like Helmsley and Kirkbymoorside or go further afield to Whitby, you can be sure of a dog-friendly welcome, great food and drink and legendary hospitality. You also always have the choice of a different type of day out at Dalby Forest and Flamingo Land, while the modern seaside resorts of Scarborough, Whitby and Filey are just a half hour away.

On the doorstep is Pickering, a beautiful moorland town with plenty of its own attractions, not the least the weekly and monthly markets, so you’ll never be short of supplies or places to soak up the atmosphere. At nights, retire to your little courtyard and enjoy the big skies before a great night’s sleep in a big comfy bed.
