Things To Do in Pickering

The cottage is named in tune with the title of a mythical train platform from which Harry Potter embarks on his life of wizardry, and that’s because the Hogwarts Express to Hogsmeade uses the very line and steam loco which is across the road. Kids will love the train ride, which takes you to the actual station of Goathland on the Pickering to Grosmont stretch. Adults are free to admit they love it just as much, and the dogs will love sticking their noses out of the windows. Along the way, you’ll cross the Larpool Viaduct, with breathtaking views for miles around.

Stop off in the North York Moors National Park, and get back to reality with some excellent moorland walks and hillside paths, all maintained and mapped out by the national park authority. Take the car and explore the rolling hills and spot places made famous in Heartbeat, as well as enjoying the local food, drink and hospitality in the local centres of Kirkbymoorside and Helmsley. Malton is also a wonderful market town to rival Pickering, where you can stock up on local produce and crafts.

Head east to the North Yorkshire Heritage Coast, an unbroken clifftop and beach route from Saltburn in the north to Filey in the south. Along the way, you’ll find Whitby, Robin Hood’s Bay and Scarborough, with world-famous nature reserves and seaside attractions to please young, old and canine alike. Further inland from the Moors is the Yorkshire Dales National Park, with wild adventures and challenges all its own, stretching right over to Cumbria and the Lake District.

Last Word

This cottage has a lot of promise for a medium to large family or group of friends, especially those with dogs along for the journey. Humans of all ages will enjoy its charm and rustic interior, based around a log burner in its original fireplace, with the choice of outdoor breakfasts or suppers outside in the secluded, covered patio to bookmark the days. Walk into Pickering, enjoy its weekly market and medieval castle, but don’t miss the superb steam train ride from the station across the way, which you’ll hear tooting from time to time in the cottage.

The train is an excellent way to explore the North York Moors, a different landscape from the Dales with its high, exposed heathland, dotted everywhere with lovely villages and historic towns, especially Kirkbymoorside, where you can get an authentic flavour of this part of Yorkshire. Head into the moors by train, car, foot or bike, and discover exhilarating walks and views, much less visited than other national parks.

Enjoy the seaside air and attractions along the Heritage Coast, letting the dogs enjoy the beaches while you have some fish and chips, and head back home in the evenings to your own private piece of Pickering and the hospitality of North Yorkshire.
