Things To Do in Easington
There is a great community pub in Easington, The Tiger Inn, just a mile from the village that is dog and family friendly and serves pub grub staples such as locally cured ham, egg and homemade chips. The historic town of Loftus is just under two miles from The Cottage and The White Horse Inn is a sports’ bar showing all the major football and rugby games.
If you decide to walk then you might see the excavation at the Street House farm site on the edge of the town. It reveals evidence of the earliest salt production site ever found in the UK and one of the first of its kind in Western Europe, dating back to around 3,800BC.
Saltburn-by-the Sea is a resort with a rich heritage dating back to the Victorian heyday. Take a walk on its 600ft pier or take the cliff lift 150ft down to the shoreline and get the deckchairs out and soak up the sun on its Blue Flag beach. The beach is popular with surfers because its clean water picks up more swell than neighbouring spots.
Protected from the wind by the imposing Huntcliff on the east side, it makes for a great day of sun, sea and sand. Pack a picnic or shake out your towels and head for a light lunch at a promenade café. Other highlights include the town’s formal Italian Gardens served by a miniature railway that the younger set won’t be able to resist.
In the opposite direction is the picture-postcard fishing harbour of Staithes. With its quaint tearooms such as Dotty’s Vintage and its pubs steeped in history such as the Cod and Lobster, it offers a day out filled with walks past colourful fishermen’s cottage that are built up from the harbour that still teems with boats and lobster pots.
A little further down the coast, a pleasant three-mile walk along the coast, is Runswick Bay, voted Britain’s Best Beach 2020 by the Sunday Times newspaper.
Last Word
Easington sits on the northern edge of the North York Moors National Park, with the rugged North Sea coastline under three miles away. The Cottage is on the edge of the village that dates back to Saxon times and the Church of All Saints, Gothic after its final rebuild in the late 1800s, goes back to pre-Norman.
History and hiking go hand-in-hand here with the Cleveland Way passing close to The Cottage. If you want to hike the highest cliff in England, then head 1.4 miles to the hamlet of Boulby where the rock face rises 679ft above sea level.
This destination provides an insight into a part of our country as you have never seen it before. From pre-historic finds to present-day pastimes, this multi-faceted location is guaranteed to give even the choosiest customer no room to complain.
The Cottage is the perfect base whether it is a stand-alone booking or forms part of a larger party’s accommodation in an area that is one of Northumberland’s best kept secrets.
