Things To Do in Eppleby

For a real taste of this part of the world, a pub has to be on the cards and what better place than the Brownlow Arms, just 1.8 miles from The Sycamores to the village of Caldwell? This dog-friendly destination retains many of its original features, such as the cast iron fireplace in the bar. It prides itself on its seasonal specials, locally sourced, like the partridge with port and red berries and it offers excellent value meals from 5 pm to 7.30pm on weeknights.

Eppleby is under a mile from Forcett, where there are the Stanwick Iron Age Fortifications, an Iron Age hill fort comprising more than five miles of ditches and ramparts over 741 acres. Those in the know about ancient settlements say it became one of the most important of its kind to the Brigantes kingdom during the Roman occupation. Combine history with a bit of healthy activity by walking part of this “super fort’s” perimeter.

Drive the seven miles to Richmond, a town steeped in history and one that hasn’t lost any of its traditional charms. There are plenty of pubs, art galleries and museums here, but its best-kept secret is the Millage House Garden. Only a stone’s throw from the Market Place it is often overlooked even though it saw off more than 3000 others to win a Royal Horticultural Society award for being a model for all town gardens. Richmond is the gateway to the North Yorkshire Dales and, from the centre, waymarked walks that take in Richmond Falls, a series of waterfalls along the River Swale.

Last Word

Every now and again, you will chance upon a holiday home with its own unique selling point, and The Sycamores can boast more than one. Your hosts Carole and Tim, run a catering business and are happy to provide home-cooked meals for you and your group. However, this is merely an option because the kitchen has everything you need to cook up a feast. Coupled with this, the outdoor space is hard to beat. Set in an established garden, there is a BBQ as well as a fire pit and a heated roundhouse that gives new meaning to alfresco dining.

Beyond the manicured lawn is a paddock for exercising the dog where curious horses will come up to the fence to check out the new kids on the block. With countryside all around you, this is what getting away from it all is all about.

This is a rural location on the edge of the gateway to the North Yorkshire Dales, a walker and cyclist’s dream destination. Back at base, after a day out in the Dales, you can summon the designated mixologist of the group to create cocktails to enjoy from the depths of the hot tub. Bliss.
