Things To Do in Uig

Set in a sheltered horseshoe-shaped bay on Skye, Uig is a ferry port to the Western Isles and a good base for a walking holiday. Uig boasts a dramatic landscape and stunning scenery from the magnificent double waterfall in Fairy Glen, to a number of small lochs and conical shaped hills to the Norman style tower overlooking the town. Points of interest include Clach Ard Uige, a relic of an ancient stone circle standing on the hills above Uig and the ruins of a 17th century castle.

If you have youngsters with you then the walk from Uig to Fairy Glen is going to be just right. Only 1.25 miles in length. This quirky landscape of cone-shaped hills is a perfect otherworldly destination. Fairy Glen forms part of Skye’s landscape with ancient stories and myths that are sure to delight young and old minds alike. It shouldn’t take more than half an hour to walk, although it is likely you will be spotting to take in your surroundings along the way.

For grown-ups with an interest in real ales, lagers and gins a visit to the Isle of Skye Brewing Company on Uig’s pier is a must. Here you can see how the brewers and a trained chef artfully balance flavours to create award-winning products such as Young Pretender ale and Skye Blonde lager made from some pale ale, amber and caramalt.

Closer to the holiday home is a lovely stretch of beach that is less than a 10-minute walk. It is a sheltered bay making it ideal for swimming and there are places where you can picnic.

Last Word

Organising a holiday for a fairly large party, many of the individuals having different ideas of the perfect break, can be a logistical nightmare. To make everyone’s dream come true book Princes Point Villa on the northern coastline of the Isle of Skye. From Uig, which is a little over two miles away, you can go on boat trips to the neighbouring island of St Kilda, the last outpost of north-western Europe lying 85 miles west of Skye.

It is a dual UNESCO world heritage site and a national nature reserve. It has the biggest colony of puffins in Britain thanks to its high cliffs. Boats leave just before 7am, and your early start will be rewarded with sightings of whales, dolphins and seabirds in their hundreds of thousands.

The accommodation is geared for groups of up to eight with its open plan kitchen and dining area, utility room, downstairs cloakroom and an outdoor area that includes a open-sided, roofed space made for BBQing and alfresco dining. The manicured lawn will ensure that your pooches can safely exercise on the days that you are not out walking.

Princes Point Villa is a perfect base to see the mythical Isle of Skye where you can lose yourself in nature, experience Scottish hospitality at its best, as well as spending quality time with your family or friends.
