Things To Do in Godmersham

You are in holy company here because St Lawrence the Martyr church where the loft is located still holds a fragment of Saint Thomas Becket’s shrine, which formed a fundamental stop-over on the Pilgrim’s Way that has waymarks dating back more than 1,000 years ago. The Chilham Lost Trails’ walks, both east and west, start less than three miles from the loft. The east 4.5-mile walk incorporates ancient Perry Woods with its log-hewn sculptures of badgers, foxes and owls. From its elevated point, there are awe-inspiring views of the Kent coast and countryside.

The dog-friendly Woolpack in Chilham is just 2.7 miles from base and it is right on the mark for a romantic meal with gastro-pub plates such as nearby Kelly’s Farm goat’s cheese minted pea risotto with pecorino and Sussex Red short ribs with sweet potato. The wine list complements the menu, and the selection of real ales includes Spitfire, an amber Kentish ale, and Whitstable Bay Black Oyster stout.

If you are looking at a bit of bubbly with provenance, then a visit to Chartham Vineyard is going to be well worth your while. On the family-run Burnt House Farm, it is a tribute to the original Chartham vineyard. More than 700 years later, there is now an established six acres of award-winning vines, spearheaded by a family passionate about wine. There is an on-site shop where you can buy a half-dozen Starter Case or a few bottles of sparkling Rose de Noir 2017.

The up-market seaside destination of Seasalter, renowned for its oysters, is 13 miles from the loft and the enchanting historic city of Canterbury is a 20–minute car journey.

When you have tucked into the homemade muffins in your welcome hamper, taken the pooch through idyllic Percy Woods, and checked out the coastline, then a stint of retail therapy in Ashford will exceed all expectations. A little more than six miles from the loft, the town has a 75-store outlet where you can pick up discounted brand labels. When you’ve shopped ‘til you’re about to drop, you can refuel at one of the 14 places to eat and drink. To wind down, catch a movie at the Ashford Picturehouse, an art cinema with a bar.

It is not often you’ll get to stay in a cart barn conversion in a historic churchyard that will steal your heart. Its elevated position gives way to sweeping views of the countryside from the alfresco dining decking or the separate secluded hot tub.
