Things To Do in Chiddingstone

The house has a six-acre garden with lawns, patios and outdoor furniture, so you and your guests (including the four-legged ones) have plenty of room to stretch your legs before leaving the grounds; there’s even an outdoor heated swimming pool. Outside the grounds, the village of Chiddingstone is a short walk away and is a step back in time to the 12th century. There are also five pubs within walking distance, so your party can split up and make plans for the day.

History is all around this part of the country, and culture lovers will want to see Hever Castle, home of Anne Boleyn, which is just three miles away. A short drive north takes you to Chartwell, home of Winston Churchill and now a National Trust property in its own right. To the southwest is Standen House and Garden, a dog-friendly stately home with acres of gardens and a visitor centre where you can rest and have some refreshments. To the southeast is Scotney Castle, another historic landmark managed by the National Trust.

The Weald is an ancient area of land separating the North and South Downs, and there are hundreds of miles of country trails, cycle routes and horse riding paths to explore from the outskirts of London down to the English Channel. Talking of London, a 45-minute train ride from Edenbridge takes you right to the heart of the city, so there’s no need to worry about getting parked or paying congestion charges.

Last Word

This is a spectacular place to stay in its own right. With the facilities to cater to 26 people in great comfort, everybody (including pooches) should leave feeling like they’ve had a memorable holiday. With the space to kick back on your own, maybe read a couple of books and enjoy the quiet, you’ll feel any stress melt away quickly. If exercise helps with this, the swimming pool, games room and outdoor sports areas are at your disposal and will undoubtedly give the younger members somewhere to expend their energy.

Surrounding the house and grounds are history and nature, from Hever Castle to the ten National Trust properties within a half-hour drive in any direction, to the Weald, North and South Downs AONBs stretching to the coast. With protected wildlife sites and some of the quietest countryside in the south of England, you’ll have to pinch yourself to remember that London is only a short train journey away.

With all this choice, it would be great to stay in this house for a very long time indeed; whatever your tastes or those of your guests, you’ll be able to make every second count and take away some extraordinary memories.
