Things To Do in Buckland Monachorum

Take a short walk down the lane into the village, a timeless place with a pub and a history linked ultimately to Buckland Abbey. Follow the wooded brook westwards to the River Tavy, which is the boundary of the abbey’s grounds. These are full of surprises and very dog friendly as well as romantic. There are man-made waterfalls, beautiful gardens and a cider orchard to explore.

A short drive east takes you to Yelverton, a thriving centre with plenty of shops, pubs and eateries where you can refresh yourself and stock up with anything you need for your holiday. For more choice, the major town of Tavistock is just to the north and is a great place to spend a morning or afternoon. Known as the home of cream teas, you’ll want to sample some of these as well as visiting the superb Tavistock Viaduct, complete with a walking path that goes underneath it, and the Grade I listed Tavistock Museum. Dartmoor National Park is east of the town, home to forests, rivers, wetlands, and ponies.

The Tamar Valley AONB lies around the river of the same name, which divides Devon and Cornwall to the southwest. The AONB covers 75 square miles of some of the most beautiful countryside in the southwest. Its protected status means that the river estuary is unspoilt, unlike many others in the area. This makes it home to rare birds and wildlife, and there is a superb visitor centre with maps and routes of activities, including a visit to the AONB’s donkey sanctuary.

This atmosphere carries on in the villages around and about, connecting to the ancient abbey everywhere in the area. Take a walk with the dog down by the river and explore some of the abbey’s grounds, or try the charms of the bigger local village of Yelverton. Tavistock is home to Devon hospitality and superb local foods, which are sure to help your mood, and then you have a choice of the AONB and National Park to explore, by foot, bike, canoe or whatever suits your mood.

With rare wildlife to discover and historic sites in surprising places wherever you go, you’re sure to be inspired, while the dog will find sights and smells of its own all day long. Come home at night to your own private spot and congratulate yourself for choosing this lovely holiday cottage.
