Things To Do in Beddgelert

A short drive or walk away from the cottage is the Welsh village of Beddgelert. Bring the dogs to visit the grave of Gelert, legendary hound to Llewelyn the Great. In the village, you’ll find a preserved railway line with steam locomotive, perfect for exploring the local landscape with your loved ones and pets. Possibly the most dramatic train line in Britain, this will take you to Ffestiniog at the coast in nearby Porthmadog.

Enjoy the local hospitality and stunning views, and take a short trip to Cardigan Bay. Here are miles of golden sand all the way down to Harlech. Spend some time visiting this historic town, with its 8th century Norman Castle. Harlech town is full of independent shops, eateries, and pubs, complete with spectacular views over Cardigan Bay and the Irish Sea. A short drive to the east lies Coed y Brenin Forest Park, complete with hundreds of miles of wooded paths to explore on foot or by bike.

This is the gateway to Snowdonia National Park, which lies all around this area. Apart from Snowdon itself, there are many other peaks to explore, including nearby Glyder Fawr and Carnedd Llewelyn. The mountains also have play host to some of the highest lakes in the country, such as Llyn Padarn and Llyn Peris. There are also lovely villages that sit in their shadows. Don’t miss Capel Cruig for a well-earned rest and some legendary Welsh cooking after a hard morning out with the dogs.

Last Word

Waterfall Cottage is a beautiful place to spend a romantic break, and many people extend their stay to last a week. Not a barn conversion like some holiday cottages; this is an original structure built from Welsh stone with original beam work. It’s been cleverly laid out to make the most of the space of its semi-detached footprint; this means the comfy sofa is right next to the big double bed, perfect for evenings in.

The garden area and immediate access to the surrounding countryside make it the perfect place to take the dogs for a holiday. The stream and waterfall next to the cottage are just the start of the natural wonders all around, including the peaks from Snowdonia, which dominate the area. A great place to start is Beddgelert Forest, just down the lane from the cottage.

There are plenty of romantic places to visit nearby, from the cosy villages like Capel Cruig to the historic county town of Harlech. History is all around, including the railways, which are a reminder of the area’s flint mining history. A working steam railway is not something you find on every romantic break, and from Beddgelert, you can travel straight to Porthmadog, with its views, hospitality and spectacular beaches. For a couple with pets, this cottage really has the potential for an unforgettable holiday.
