Things To Do in Wicken
Hidden away near a village on the edge of the Fens in East Anglia. The perfect place to take the family or go with a group of friends and your canine companion.
A rural hideaway near the cathedral city of Ely, with endless countryside all around, just the thing for walks with pooch by your side. This part of England is famously flat, so there’s no need to worry about having to climb hills. There are also lots of waterways, both natural and man made, which your furry friend will love exploring.
The village of Wicken stretches along the High Street, and oozes rural charm. It also has a dog friendly pub where you can stop off before or after a day out exploring the local countryside and nearby attractions.
Right on your doorstep is Wicken Fen National Nature Reserve, which is the oldest such reserve owned by the National Trust. This dog friendly attraction covers more than 250 hectares, and is home to over 9,000 species of wildlife. You’ll also find traditional Fenland windmills, boat trips and miles and miles of paths to walk or cycle along.
Further afield, the city of Ely, known as the Ship of the Fens because of its 66 metre high tower, is a great place for a day out. Visit the canine friendly pubs, cafes and eateries, and browse in the many independent shops which Ely hosts.
Ely has a mainline train station, so you can travel to London in just over an hour if the mood takes you. For a different experience, the university city of Cambridge is a short drive from Wicken.
Spend the day sightseeing or punting on the River Cam, and soak up the city’s unique atmosphere.
Breeds Farm Cottage is a beautiful country cottage with an original country feel, which is also perfectly equipped for the modern family or group of grown ups.
Mainly on the ground floor level, apart from the one double bedroom in the sloping roof, you and your canine companion will have loads of room to kick back and do your thing. Enjoy the sitting out area and the private back garden, with its grass lawn, trees and herbaceous borders.
Take a walk into lovely Wicken, and have a drink or something to eat before heading off to explore the countryside with your furry friend. Take in the fantastic nature reserve at Wicken Fen, or head off to visit the cathedral cities of Ely and Cambridge.
Whether you spend the days exploring the countryside or more man made delights, come home to this fabulous piece of old England and put your feet up with pooch for company.
