Things To Do in Dovercourt

Located in the historical village of Dovercourt, renowned for its Civil War history, there is plenty to see and do nearby. Dovercourt Cliffs overlook the seaside resort of Dovercourt Bay which is a quaint, family resort with sand and shingle beaches that have blue flag rating and far-reaching views out across the bay.

The long promenade has a skate park, model yacht pond and boating lake and visitors can see the two now fully restored 19th century lighthouses, the Dovercourt Range Lights, from here.

Just a stone’s throw from Dovercourt is the port of Harwich. Harwich has an attractive old town and is where the Mayflower, the ship that took the first pilgrims to America, is believed to have been built.

Learn more about the local history with the Maritime Heritage Trail, a guided walking tour available during summer months that takes in all the key sights and locations in the town.

Discover the Treadwheel Crane, built in 1667 to raise and lower goods in the Naval Yard or take in a film at the Electric Palace Cinema, the oldest unaltered purpose-built cinema in Britain. Don’t forget to take a stroll down Ha’Penny Pier, one of the few surviving working wooden piers.

Dating back to 1853, the pier is now a popular choice for tourists and fishermen alike and the Harwich Visitor’s Centre is located here.

Slightly further afield is the town of Felixstowe which makes for a fun and interesting day out. Take the foot ferry from Harwich to Felixstowe and discover the family-friendly attractions, the beautiful beaches and gardens and the wealth of history within the town.

Landguard Fort was built in the 18th century to defend the approach into Harwich Harbour. The fort played an active role in both World Wars and the Cold War.

Now an English Heritage site, guided and audio tours are available. The Seafront Gardens are also well worth a visit, offering a beautiful, peaceful setting and a chance to watch the ships out at sea.

Our Thoughts

Dovercourt Hall Cottage has been beautifully restored and it combines practicality, comfort and ease with considered indulgent touches.

The Cottage is well-placed for day trips to the beach and exploring the local maritime history. There is a wealth of things to do nearby but without any pressure or rush.

From day trips to Harwich to learn about the pilgrims who changed the history of the world when they set sail, to Felixstowe and its role in two World Wars and the Cold War as a different kind of history was made.

The cottage really is a relaxing accommodation choice, both within its grounds and beyond.
