Things To Do in West Mersea
Found to the south-east of Colchester in Essex, Mersea Island is reached via a tidal causeway, so keep an eye on the tides for access. It’s become well known for its seafood eateries and there are lots of beautiful places to walk with your dog here.
West Mersea beach is dog friendly all year round. It’s a sand and shingle stretch with sticky mud under the water so if you are going paddling here, it’s best to wear beach shoes. There’s a popular café and West Mersea Oyster Bar is the best place to try oysters, sprinkled in vinegar and lemon juice.
Hop on the Lady Grace and enjoy a boat trip around the island. They welcome doggies onboard as long as they sit on the floor of the vessel. Spot birds and learn all kinds of interesting local facts from the guide.
If you’re lucky, you could spot a kingfisher at Cudmore Country Park. It’s a quiet place where you and your pooch can wander for miles. Take a picnic and a ball, you could spend all day enjoying these natural surroundings.
To venture further afield, the sandy beach at Brightlingsea can be reached in 25 minutes. Beach huts, fish and chips, a sea pool and a promenade welcomes you here. The busy seaside town of Clacton is a little further up the coast for a pier, fairground rides, one-armed bandits and lively pubs. It’s only 10 miles to the Roman town of Colchester where there is a museum, Medieval buildings, an art centre, theatre and shops for every budget. Colchester Castle was built when the city was England’s capital around AD53 so there is a lot of history to discover here.
West Mersea is the place to head to get away from it all. The beach here is unspoilt by flashing lights and slot machines, but there is a choice of cafes and eateries serving up fresh fish and seafood that receive rave reviews from the foodies.
Little Lodge has been lovingly fitted with everything you could want for in a holiday cottage.
With the beach 350 yards away and a pub and shop just a little further, you could leave the car in its parking spot and spend a relaxing time exploring on foot with your furry companion. What a perfect way to unwind.
