Things To Do in Sible Hedingham, Halstead
In the heart of the countryside, The Croft is surrounded by myriad footpaths, walking trails and cycling tracks. You could spend a whole day, with your dogs by your side, exploring all the villages and natural landmarks in the area.
Castle Hedingham is a short walk away and is the namesake of Hedingham Castle, thought to be among one of the most well preserved Norman castles in England. The remaining keep was built in 1140 and is the only standing part of the castle to survive.
It is steeped in history and is open to the public from spring through to autumn were you can watch displays of jousting, falconry, archery and re-enactment battles at different times of the year. If you are looking for some more recent history, you can visit Colne Valley Railway which has a number of restored locomotives and carriages that will take you on a mile long ride along the scenic valley. Two carriages stationed on platform 3 have been converted into tea rooms where you can find hot and cold refreshments.
The town of Braintree is the closest large town to The Croft and is home to a wealth of historical sites and museums. You can also find a great selection of shops, restaurants, cafes and pubs in Braintree for those looking for options for dining out. If you are looking for something closer to the cottage, there are a selection of pubs in the village, the closest being a mere 80 yards away.
The local shop is under a mile away if you are in need of essentials. For larger grocery shopping, Braintree is the nearest town to stock up.
