Things To Do in Woodham Walter, Maldon
Famous for its yachting scene, Burnham-on-Crouch was once known for its oysters. A former oyster port, today it is home to four sailing clubs, a picturesque waterfront, excellent museums and a rich history that is yours to discover on a visit here.
Known as the ‘Cowes of the East Coast’ within sailing and yachting circles, Burham-on-Crouch has a beautiful quay from which you can watch the water lap the shores.
Home to an RNLI lifeboat station, the town’s museum and some delightful houseboats, the quay is a popular choice for coffees, cakes and good food at its many independent coffee shops and pubs.
You can even see the striking Royal Corinthian Yacht Club building from the quay, a local landmark if ever there was one.
Six miles from the lodges lies the town of Chelmsford. Cricket fans should book tickets in advance for a day’s cricket at the town’s County Ground for the best seats in the house or visit RHS Garden Hyde Hall for gardens sure to win the heart of any green fingered gardener.
RHS Garden Hyde Hall has several themed gardens to visit, including its Australia and New Zealand Garden which has plants native to these countries that have survived against the odds in a harsher British climate.
Another favourite is the Dry Garden, planted with drought-resistant plants such as Californian poppies and Pampas grass.
Find out more about Chelmsford’s role in British history and the history of the town itself at the Chelmsford Museum. Discover what life was like in Ice Age Chelmsford, what happened when a prince was buried in Anglo-Saxon times or visit the Essex Regiment Museum to learn about the town’s military history.
Both museums offer fascinating insights into Chelmsford’s role as a market town serving London and Colchester, once the Roman capital of Britain – Chelmsford’s name does come from the Latin Caesaromagus, Caesar’s market for a good reason!
Warren Lodges encompass all that you demand of a holiday in a modern lodge, with premium appliances, cosy bedrooms, a relaxing living room area and a hot tub to soak in after a day on your feet exploring Chelmsford, Maldon or Burnham-on-Crouch.
From Maldon Salt to top-notch local food in Burnham-on-Crouch or just marvelling at the yachts parked at Burnham-on-Crouch’s quay, this area has a lot to discover and most people haven’t done so yet, meaning a crowd-free break.
Less than an hour from central London, you can be in the fresh air and green countryside before you’ve even had chance to read the paper. Once at the lodge, enjoy the sight of native grazing deer and expansive woodland from your window every day, for an incredibly relaxing break. Further afield see pretty villages, thatched cottages and sandy beaches for the ultimate in rest and recuperation.
