Things To Do in Hickling
Hickling Village is a pretty place with a local shop and a choice of 2 inns where you can order food. The area is best known for its body of water – Hickling Broad is the biggest of the Norfolk Broads.
It’s a stunning nature reserve where marsh harriers, common cranes, kingfishers and deer can be spotted. Boat trips can be booked here and most of them have a tour guide who provides lots of information about the animals here. It’s also the perfect place to fish.
The coast is 4 miles from Hickling, with Sea Palling and Horsey Gap just minutes away. The beach at Horsey is where a huge colony of grey seals give birth to their pups from November to January.
These fantastic mammals return every year and visitors come from far and wide to take a peek at them. Stay at the back of the sands and doggies are welcome on their leads.
During the summer months, all the pups have left but adult seals can often be seen swimming close to shore. Winterton-on-Sea is a few miles from Horsey, it’s a pretty seaside village with a couple of pubs and a chip shop. The stone-built houses here are so picturesque they look like they’re from a movie set.
Bure Valley Railway line starts in Wroxham and goes on to Aylsham. Wroxham is the gateway to the Norfolk Broads and is a bustling little town. Doggies are allowed to ride in the carriages so you can all enjoy the 18-mile journey together.
The waterside village of Horning has 3 pretty pubs and a small harbour. You can book a trip on the paddle steamer that leaves from here, it’s a novel way to see the Broads.
