Things To Do in Old Newton

Old Newton is a quiet village in Suffolk. It’s only 2 miles from the busy town of Stowmarket where there’s a market held in the centre every Thursday and Saturday which is popular with visitors and local residents.

The high street boasts a wide range of shops, including some independent boutiques in the Old Fox Yard. The Museum of East Anglia is crammed with local history and the creative arts centre hosts live music, poetry evenings and small theatre productions. There is a 3-km walking trail through woodlands and beside the river that is a big hit with doggies.

Bury St Edmunds, a few miles away, boasts a 14th-century cathedral and an abbey to tour. A wide selection of shops are available, some along the high street and some in a new indoor mall.

The picturesque village of Lavenham is a tourist hot spot thanks to the half-timbered Tudor architecture and the spectacular church. This Medieval town features as a backdrop in many blockbusting films.

The gardens at Helmingham Hall are beautifully landscaped and you can take your furry companion along for a tour of the plants and flowers.

There’s a rose garden, a knot garden, an orchard and herbaceous borders to explore. The deer park covers 400 acres – there’s been a herd here since 1660.

The artist John Constable stayed for a while in the rectory and painted some of the scenes he saw at Helmingham Hall.

Spend some time in Ipswich, there’s a busy marina with cafes, bars and restaurants. You can hop on a boat here and travel down the River Orwell.

Cultural events including theatre, dance, music and art can always be found in Ipswich. And there are shops of every kind too.

Our Thoughts

Book a stay at Fairy Cottage and spend a quiet few days in the lovely Suffolk countryside.

The one-storey home has an enclosed area of lawn where you can sit in peace and enjoy your morning cuppa. The roomy lounge and dining area comes with plenty of space for 6 people.

Stowmarket, Bury St Edmunds and Ipswich are all nearby where there is a choice of great things to do. And the traditional seaside town of Aldeburgh is just 32 miles away where you can stroll at the back of the pebbles or tuck into lunch at one of the dog-friendly eateries in the village.
