The high street boasts a wide range of shops, including some independent boutiques in the Old Fox Yard. The Museum of East Anglia is crammed with local history and the creative arts centre hosts live music, poetry evenings and small theatre productions. There is a 3-km walking trail through woodlands and beside the river that is a big hit with doggies.
Bury St Edmunds, a few miles away, boasts a 14th-century cathedral and an abbey to tour. A wide selection of shops are available, some along the high street and some in a new indoor mall.
The picturesque village of Lavenham is a tourist hot spot thanks to the half-timbered Tudor architecture and the spectacular church. This Medieval town features as a backdrop in many blockbusting films.
The gardens at Helmingham Hall are beautifully landscaped and you can take your furry companion along for a tour of the plants and flowers.
There’s a rose garden, a knot garden, an orchard and herbaceous borders to explore. The deer park covers 400 acres – there’s been a herd here since 1660.
The artist John Constable stayed for a while in the rectory and painted some of the scenes he saw at Helmingham Hall.
Spend some time in Ipswich, there’s a busy marina with cafes, bars and restaurants. You can hop on a boat here and travel down the River Orwell.
Cultural events including theatre, dance, music and art can always be found in Ipswich. And there are shops of every kind too.
