Things To Do in Cutthorpe, Chesterfield
The market town of Chesterfield is 15 minutes by car from Cutthorpe and is a popular choice for history, shopping and an unusual church spire. The crooked spire at St Mary and All Saints church in the town is a must-see. Built with unseasoned wood, when the 32 tons of lead tiles were fitted to the spire, the weight of them caused the spire to twist, leading to its unusual appearance today.
Chesterfield’s markets have some great bargains to be found. The town’s indoor market is held at Chesterfield Market Hall which was renovated in 2013. Open daily, fresh fish, clothing, cakes and flowers are amongst the wares on sale.
The town’s outdoor market dates back to 1165 and each day brings a different market, from a farmers’ market once a month to antiques and flea markets as well as a general market three times a week. Stock up on fresh food for meals back at the cottage.
Bakewell is a short drive from the cottage and is famous for more than its sweet tart. The town of Lambton in Jane Austen’s classic novel Pride and Prejudice is said to be inspired by Bakewell, so head there for yourself to see some of the on-location spots from the BBC adaptation. Make sure you pop into the Old House Museum for an insight into the history of Bakewell and to learn about the changing role of the building itself over time.
The Chatsworth Estate, believed to be the inspiration for Pemberley in Pride and Prejudice is a must-visit for fans of Mr Darcy. See the splendour of the house itself or simply take in the sights of the manicured 105 acre gardens where dogs on leads are very welcome
For a relaxing holiday with your family and pooch, Greenfarm Holiday Cottages are the obvious choice. Relax in the hot tub or enjoy breakfast in the garden with patio furniture carefully place to optimise your view of the picturesque countryside which surrounds the cottages.
For shopping that takes a break from the high street, head to Chesterfield for quirky antiques and bargains galore. Cook up a feast together in the kitchen with fresh produce from both the indoor and outdoor market or treat yourself to a slice of cake in the market’s cafés.
Enjoy at least one Bakewell Tart during your stay – it’s an absolute must-eat for anyone holidaying in the area.
Relax together on the comfy sofas in the living area with a good book, your favourite TV shows or board games for some quality family time, with your pooch by your side.
