Things To Do in Bonsall
Cromford is a short drive from Bonsall and is home to the world’s first water powered cotton mills which led to the Industrial Revolution. Developed and built by Sir Richard Arkwright, a purpose built community grew around the mills as people from the countryside headed here to find work and bring up their families.
Find out more about how this small village changed the world at Arkwright’s Cromford Mill which is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site of Cromford Mills and Mason Mills.
Mason Mills is now home to a shopping complex but Cromford Mills maintains its historical appeal with guided tours, a visitor centre, café and small shops.
Take a walk with your pooch along the river from Cromford Wharf to High Peak Junction, to make a start on the High Peak Trail, a 17 mile trail for those who love walking, cycling and horse riding.
History fans will love a trip back in time at Crich Tramway Village. Step off a traditional wooden tram into a period street, complete with buildings saved from other towns and cities in the UK, then rebuilt brick by brick in Crich.
Shop at the local sweet shop or enjoy some good food at the Red Lion Pub, once a public house in Stoke-on-Trent. The Red Lion serves cask ales and welcomes four-legged friends. There are history-related events and exhibitions at the village, too, both of which change regularly so check in advance for what’s on.
Take a trip on a cable car at Matlock Bath to reach the Heights of Abraham, a 60 acre country park which has designated walks around the woodlands and cavern tours of the Masson and Rutland Caverns.
Learn about how the caverns were mined in the 17th century and about the Masson Cavern’s 350 million year history. For the best view over the Derwent Valley, stroll to the Tinker’s Shaft lookout point. The lead mine shaft is below your feet and all around you is beautiful countryside.
Poppy Cottage and the surrounding area are every history lover’s dream. From 350 million year old caverns to a ride on an old-fashioned tram or cable car, this part of the Peak District can be enjoyed on foot or by car.
Shop at Mason Mills and imagine what life was like there during the Industrial Revolution, with machines whirring and cotton being prepared for export to countries all over the globe or hear from the man himself, Richard Arkwright in virtual format, on how he made mass production a reality.
Back at the cottage, stoke up the fire in its magnificent fireplace and dine in the cosy living room. On warmer days light the barbecue for al fresco dining then retire to the summerhouse for fantastic views and good conversation with your family and friends, all of this with your loyal four-legged companion by your side.
