Things To Do in Turnditch, Ashbourne
Belper is a popular market town with Georgian architecture which grew from a small village in 1740 to an industrial town of the Industrial Revolution with the arrival of Jedediah Strutt, a local businessman who brought cotton spinning to the town, increasing its population as people moved there for work in the Victorian era. Belper was once home to five cotton mills, powered by water.
Today, North Mill is the only one that remains open and it is now known as Strutt’s North Mill, with exhibitions detailing how the town changed over time. Take some time to visit the museum which can be explored on your own or with a local guide. Tuck into some excellent food at the town’s pubs or tea and cakes in the town’s high streets or indulge in a spot of retail therapy.
Escape from it all at Belper River Gardens located next to Strutt’s North Mill, where you will find a boat house and rowing boats, a children’s play area, a pond with ducks to feed and of course, a spot for walks with your canine friend.
The Victorian era was also one of change for the town of Matlock, famous for its spa and hydro treatments. The market town grew under the influence of industrialist John Smedley in the 19th century and you can still see his influence today in buildings in the town.
Crown Square is fantastic for shopping, cafés and restaurants, with lots of independent shops a must-visit for individual purchases. Enjoy a walk along the banks of the River Derwent with your pooch by your side, and make sure you spend some time at Hall Leys Park, a restored public park with boating lake, fountains and beautiful flower beds.

From walks in the countryside nearby or strolls along the River Derwent at Matlock to cultural insights into the region’s growth during the Victorian era and its legacy even today, come rain or shine, there is something to do for all ages.
You can even choose to travel the old fashioned way with a trip on a vintage tram at Crich Tramway Village or a steam train or diesel train operated by Peak Railways from Matlock to Rowsley. Kids, old and young, will love this for an adventure on a day out!
After a day in the fresh air, enjoy a freshly-cooked meal together in the cottage’s beautiful kitchen then relax in the cosy living room with the wood burner keeping everyone toasty.
