Things To Do in Drayton, Uppingham
Nestling near the village of Drayton, in a quiet corner of Leicestershire, near the borders with Northants and Rutland. Take a doggie walk into Drayton, or explore the paths and bridleways across the area. The River Welland flows to the south of the village, and has lots of tributaries for pooch to sniff out, as well as fish to catch if that’s your thing. For dog friendly country pubs, try the nearby villages of Cottingham, Ashley and Medbourne, just a short drive in any direction.
There is rolling countryside all around, plus lots of rivers and reservoirs for two and four legged visitors to enjoy. The area is popular with lovers of outdoor activities, including golf, fishing, water sports and horse riding; the cottage has stabling facilities if you should need them.
Rutland Water is a ten minute drive to the east, and has lots of water sports to enjoy, plus country walks and dog friendly visitors centre. For a morning or afternoon out, try Rockingham Castle, which is only 3 miles to the east. This is a 900 year old building, which also has acres of grounds for your furry friend to enjoy.
A slightly longer drive takes you to one of the many lovely towns in the area, which often date back many hundreds of years. Market Harborough is only 8 miles to the south, and is a thriving market town with lots of independent shops, a busy market, plenty of dog friendly eateries and watering holes.
Oakham, slightly further away to the north east, is the historic county of Rutland, and steeped in history. Sitting to the west of Rutland Water, this is one of the many hidden gems with important historical links which litter this part of the Heart of England.
Kent Cottage is a caringly renovated semi detached country cottage, part of a building which the owner occupies next door. With stabling facilities and access to open countryside, it’s a great base to discover the south east midlands, as well as a fantastic place to stay in its own right. With three big bedrooms, a living room with its own fire, plus a wood burner in the dining room, there’s plenty of comfort to be had for up to six people, plus two well behaved pooches.
There are country walks starting at the front or back door, along dog friendly paths and by the many streams which lace the area. A short drive in any direction, meanwhile, will take you to a stately home, market town or family friendly visitor attraction, to suit all ages, and usually to welcome canine companions.
