Things To Do in Breedon on the Hill, Nr Loughborough
Sitting in the grounds of a country house, which is also at the heart of a thriving village. Access is by a lane to the rear, which leads to and from Breedon on the Hill, a real hidden gem on the Leicestershire – Derbyshire border. Take a stroll into the village, and enjoy a drink and something to eat in either of the two dog friendly pubs, before heading off to explore the countryside.
On the way, take in the historic St Mary and St Hardulph Priory, with Anglo Saxon sculptures in the quiet grounds of a 14 hundred year old monastery. The church and village are at the heart of miles of country walks which criss cross the area, so you and your furry friend can look forward to plenty of great days out.
Calke Abbey sits in 600 acres of parkland, which is a nature reserve your curious canine will love sniffing about it. The Abbey is run by the National Trust, and has an excellent visitors centre. Also nearby is Willington, which boasts the UK’s largest inland marina. Take in the superb lakeside walks, and stop off for a bite to eat while overlooking the huge expanse of water.
If you’re a foodie, head for the nearby market town of Melbourne, which has a huge number of eateries for its size. History lovers will enjoy the nearby stately homes of Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall, which sit in the Peak District National Park. For a more adrenaline filled trip out, Donnington Park race circuit is just over the border in Derbyshire. There are races held throughout the year, as well as the annual Download Festival.
