The pretty village of Foxton is just a mile from the cottage. The village is famous for Foxton Locks, a unique flight of 10 locks on the Leicester Line of the Grand Union Canal which are over 200 years old. Built in 1810, the Grade II listed locks are the longest set of staircase locks in Britain, with ten separate locks to navigate.
On a busy day up to 40 narrowboats will travel up and down the lock, each journey taking 45 minutes each. Built at a time when canals were used to transport goods around Britain, the locks needed a power source.
Engineers set about building The BoilerHouse which is now the Canal Museum. You can even try your hand at stoking the boiler to power the locks as one of its interactive exhibitions.
There are several ponds adjacent to the locks for wildlife spotting or feeding the birds and you can take your pooch along for a stroll along the canal side paths. Cyclists also love the flat terrain on the canal paths. Enjoy food at one of the two pubs located near the canal.
The town of Market Harborough is only five miles from the cottage and offers a unique shopping and dining experience with local independent shops and national chains offering a wide choice of products. The town holds a market six days a week in the centrally located Harborough Market.
From dried goods to toys, antiques, clothing, craft supplies, jewellery and fresh foods, the market continues an 800 year old tradition of selling goods and every day essentials in the town.
There are regular events at the market such as regional cheese demonstrations, so check if there is anything special to tickle your tastebuds before you go.
Visit the town’s museum on Adam and Eve Street, a small but informative museum about the town with artefacts from the Iron Age to the present day to see and hear about.
Waxwing Cottage at Holmes Farm Country Cottages is brilliantly situated for a relaxing break in the Leicestershire countryside.
Learn about local history at Foxton Locks and enjoy home-cooked food at its pubs along the canal path. Visit one of the area’s National trust properties including Lyveden, an Elizabethan lodge and garden with moat or Priest’s House at Easton on the Hill, a pre-Reformation stone building, one of the smallest buildings under the National Trust’s care.
Located on the owner’s working farm, Waxwing Cottage is ideal for families with young children or for those who enjoy walking, horse riding and cycling with plenty of fresh air and open country views.
Of course, if you simply want to recharge your batteries, you could head into Market Harborough to stock the kitchen fridge and cupboards up and then relax in the hot tub or comfortable living room with a good book for the whole of your stay!
