Things To Do in Sutton-on-Trent
Nestling in the owner’s farm as one of Dunstall Lodge Barns, in the tranquil countryside on the border of Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire. This is farming country, with a patchwork of fields for as far as the eye can see.
Take your furry friend for a walk and discover the many natural and man made waterways around, teaming with wildlife for pooch to sniff out. Head off down Grassthorpe Road into Sutton on Trent, a real English country village nestled round the High Street, and visit the local dog friendly pub and restaurant.
The River Trent flows just to the east of Sutton, and you can easily pick this up on foot. The A1 Great North Road is on the other side of the village, with perfect north to south connections.
Down river is Newark-on-Trent, a major market town with lots of historical connections. Visit Newark Castle and Gardens, which overlooks the river and is easily available by one of the many footpaths which circle the grounds.
The compact town centre is perfect for curious canines, and there are plenty of dog friendly pubs, cafes and eateries to visit. Famous attractions include the Town Hall Museum and Art Gallery, plus the National Civil War Centre – Newark Museum.
Across the Trent, and only 17 miles away from Sutton, is the city of Lincoln. This is dominated by Lincoln Castle, which sits at the top of a rather steep hill. Just outside the city are many lovely parks and commons with superb views and great walks.
Hartsholme Country Park in particular is well worth a visit; this is a 100 acre site which includes landscape gardens and lake from the Victorian era, plus natural woodland and nature trails. There’s also a dog friendly cafe where you can rest your legs and take in the scenery.
