Things To Do in Weston, Newark

The nearest village to the barn is Weston which has some excellent pubs, a shop and a takeaway. Many of the pubs are dog-friendly or you can drive to Newark for essentials, which is only ten minutes from the barn. Newark showground is home to the Nottinghamshire County Show, antique fairs and an annual dog show. The National Civil War Museum is in Newark which was a vital crossing point over the River Trent.

A six month siege in 1646 here resulted in the end of the First Civil War, which you can learn about at the museum. The Nineteen20 café-bar located inside the museum has sources its coffee beans from a small coffee producer in Sheffield and there are freshly-prepared sandwiches, cakes and stronger refreshments available.

A short drive from the cottage is Southwell, recognised as one of Nottinghamshire’s prettiest villages. Southwell’s minster has a Norman nave and stained glass windows including one designed by Nicholas Mynheer in 2014, dedicated to the Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire men who lost their lives in the First World War.

Guided visits are available and you can even climb the bell tower for splendid views across the village. Southwell holds the annual Bramley Apple Festival, dedicated to Britain’s favourite cooking apple which was first propagated here. From baking, preserves, food, drinks and even Morris dancing, it is a celebration of this quintessentially British apple.

Explore Sherwood Forest, the home of Robin Hood, where you and your dog have 375 hectares of forest filled with birds, plants and trees to enjoy. There are hundreds of ancient oak trees in the forest, which was once a royal hunting ground, some are over 500 hundred years old, with the oldest, known as Major Oak, believed to be 1,000 years old.

There are guided walks and regular events telling the story of Robin Hood and the Sheriff of Nottingham as well as craft making days and archery to take part in. The kids are catered for too with story trails, bug hunts and seasonal themed events at Halloween and Christmas.
