Things To Do in Ashbourne, Nr Derby
Sitting in the Derbyshire town of Ashbourne, just to the south of the Peak District National Park. Open countryside all around, with miles of paths and bridleways right on your doorstep for you and pooch to start exploring. The town itself is a superb example of Georgian architecture, and very much a hidden gem. There are lots of independent shops, especially on Church Street, as well as dog friendly pubs and cafés to stop off in for a rest. Fido will love exploring the alleyways and hidden courtyards which lead off the main streets.
The area boasts lots of stately homes, built to take in the superb views from the hills in this high country. The most famous is Chatsworth House, home to the Duke of Devonshire, but also nearby are Haddon Hall, Hardwick Hall, and Sudbury Hall. Kedleston Hall, on the outskirts of nearby Derby, sits in a huge 400 hectares of beautiful parkland, where well behaved pets are welcome to explore the paths and woodlands. The Hall also hosts events throughout the year.
The Peak District National Park lies just to the north of Ashbourne, giving the town the nickname of Gateway to the Peaks. This is home to hiking, biking, cave diving and horse riding, to name but a few activities for which the Park is famous. For a more sedate experience, the River Dove is easy to reach from Ashbourne, and the surrounding area of Dovedale has superb views and walks to enjoy. Pick up the Tissington Trail, a 13 mile long traffic free path, following the track bed of an old railway, through woodland and railway tunnels which pooch will love sniffing about in. The trail also leads back to Ashbourne.
Lace Cottage is a lovely, traditional Derbyshire cottage, sitting in its own courtyard, with a lovely back garden where you can take in the freshest of fresh air. There is a very homely feel to the cottage, so you’ll probably want to spend a lot of time there. Patio doors provide plenty of natural light, and the open fire is very welcoming, with your canine companion at your feet.
Step outside, and there’s open countryside all around, plus the lovely Derbyshire town of Ashbourne a brisk doggie walk away. Take in the town’s Georgian delights, including restaurants and dog friendly pubs, before heading off to the Peaks or some of the area’s man made
