Things To Do in Ellesmere
A pretty little market town in the north of Shropshire, Ellesmere takes its name from the glacial mere upon which it was founded by the ancient Britons. Recognised as the centre of the Shropshire Lake District, it has quaint, old-fashioned streets, family-owned shops and excellent opportunities for spotting local wildlife.
Take a trip on a barge on the Ellesmere Canal which although never completed according to its original plan, actually became part of an important network of canals including the Chester Canal, the Shropshire Union Canal and the Montgomery Canal, all used at one time for transporting goods in the area from other parts of the country.
Hire a rowing boat in summer and take a trip together on The Mere or take a walk in the gardens by The Mere followed by lunch in the Boathouse Ellesmere restaurant with its breath-taking views of the water.
A short drive from Broadoak Barn lies the market town of Oswestry. As well as excellent shopping in independent shops, the town is home to the British Ironwork Centre and Shropshire Sculpture Park. Man’s best friend is welcome in the sculpture park if kept on a lead and there is plenty to explore together.
The 60 acre site boasts the largest display of decorative metalwork in the United Kingdom and many of its metal sculptures are created in response to current affairs.
Local craft makers and artisans hold regular workshops to demonstrate how they create their pieces and you can tuck into a slice of fabulous cake with a freshly brewed coffee at the aptly named Forge café.
Budding ornithologists should head to the RSPB reserve at Lake Vyrnwy in Powys just over the border in Wales for the opportunity to spot ravens, buzzards and peregrines soaring in the sky above or to watch dippers nesting by the lake to the tunes whistled by the pied flycatchers and redstarts.
An excellent choice for walks taking in the reservoir and dam walls, furry friends are welcome at the reserve if kept on a lead.
Broadoak Barn is fantastic holiday cottage for a stay in the north of Shropshire.
From its comfy beds for an extra holiday lie in to the conservatory for dining in or simply enjoying a cup of tea whilst taking in the sun from the south-facing garden, a relaxing holiday here is guaranteed.
The possibilities for walks with your pooch in the surrounding area are endless. From walks along The Mere and canals at Ellesmere to the stunning views you can take in as you watch birds nest at the RSPB reserve at Lake Vyrnwy.
