Things To Do in Ellesmere , Shropshire

Ellesmere, in the North of Shropshire, is a small town where the market was established in 1221. The canal is a central feature, and the tow path alongside the water is a lovely place to walk with the dog.

There is a handful of shops in the town, such as an old-fashioned sweet shop, clothing boutique and an antique store. A selection of cafes, coffee places and pubs offer food and refreshments too.

Ellesmere Sculpture Trail has been established for a decade now – each year international contemporary artists display pieces of outdoor art around The Mere and canal side. Follow the trail with your furry companion and take in all the pieces as you go.

The Fenn’s, Whixall and Bettisfield reserve is a raised bog area that boasts birds and unusual wild plants. As it’s a wet woodland, be sure to take your wellies as you explore this unique part of Shropshire.

Head over to Beeston Castle around 20 miles from Ellesmere. Treasure is believed to be buried here, but to date it hasn’t been found. The hilltop location provides incredible views, and the 40-acres of woods is a dog-walker’s paradise.
