Things To Do in Richmond

The cabin is part of the Badgers Retreat holiday park, hidden away next to Thieves Gill, which is a tributary of Tunstall Beck and the River Swale. Take a healthy walk with the dog/s along the gill or down the lane into Tunstall village, and enjoy a drink with some superb local food while planning the day ahead. Nearby is Catterick racecourse, with meetings throughout the season. Down the Swale to the east of Catterick is Kiplin Hall, a beautiful stately home and grounds which also has a classy tea room to rest weary feet and paws.

Take a short drive to the north west and spend the day in Richmond, a bustling but beautiful historic town on the Swale. The town’s long history is on display at sites including the Culloden Tower and Friars Tower, not to mention magnificent Richmond Castle itself, dominating the town and overlooking a sharp bend in the river housing famous waterfalls. Enjoy the superb local restaurants with cuisine from many parts of the world, and treat yourself to some shopping in the elegant boutiques along the ancient streets.

Take a short drive west from Richmond into Swaledale in the Yorkshire Dales Park, and enjoy the beauty spots at Ellerton Abbey and Reeth. For the adventurous, the Dales has hundreds of miles of walking and cycle paths, plus white water rafting, climbing and other wild sports.

Last Word

Richmondshire is a part of the north which many people don’t know exists, and a family or group of friends – including the four legged kind – who love unspoilt countryside, plus those who appreciate centuries of history will love it. Follow the gill for some hidden country walks and just enjoy mother nature, then stop off for a pint or cup of tea with something lovely to eat in the charming village of Tunstall, all within a healthy walk or short drive from your cabin. Once off the A1(M), you’ll be surprised at how quickly the countryside takes over.

Follow the River Swale from Catterick to Richmond, and spend the day sightseeing along historic walks and narrow streets, under the shadow of Richmond Castle. History buffs and shoppers alike will find something to enjoy, and everyone (including dogs) can enjoy the superb food and drink available throughout the town. Stock up on some groceries and/or luxuries before heading off into the National Park, or one of the many villages and towns in and around the Tees Valley.

Whether you’ve been stretching yourself against nature or spending a quiet day with the dogs and a camera, come home at night to a level access, purpose built holiday home, complete with a four seater hot tub to help relax muscles and take it all in.
