Map of Area

Things To Do in Maerdy

The village of Maerdy lies in the valley a couple of miles away, so it is a great place to start the day with a healthy but downhill walk. Stop off at the dog-friendly village pub and plan the day ahead.
Cycling or driving is the best way to get around this part of Wales, and A5 and the River Dee take you eastwards to Corwen, where you’ll find a traditional butcher, greengrocer and baker, pubs, cafes and eateries. You’ll notice the statue of Owain Glyndŵr, the last Welsh Prince of Wales and very much a local hero.

This statue is a glimpse of the history all around this part of Wales, which you can visit by foot, bike or car, and incorporate the sights with the stunning scenery. Chirk Castle is right on the border, a Norman stronghold with manicured gardens the dogs will love, suits of armour and 18th-century government apartments inside. Just to the north is the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct over the River Dee, which will test the nerve of anyone scared of heights, while there are boat rides and the Horseshoe Falls to enjoy.

Also next to the Horseshoe Falls is the Llangollen Heritage Steam Railway, a working train line that follows the Dee. Hop on at Llangollen and take a train ride you’ll never forget. Meanwhile, a drive to the northwest and visit Snowdonia National Park, home to the mountain of the same name, and a must for hill walkers, lovers of wild sports, and those who just enjoy the stunning landscapes.

Last Word

This contemporary lodge is a unique holiday rental in an amazing part of the world and has everything the modern visitor could want.
With easy access throughout, thanks to the open-plan design and studio layout, there’s flexibility for a couple to enjoy a romantic weekend or for a larger group to have a holiday which makes the most of the British landscape, history, culture, food and drink. For those who love getting out and about, along with a couple of four-legged friends, the opportunities are almost endless.

Follow the River Dee towards the English border, taking in the resting place of a true Welsh hero, and make the most of the natural treasures like the Horseshoe Falls, and the man-made, like Pontcysyllte Aqueduct. Use your own steam or take advantage of the Llangollen Heritage Steam Railway, home to some of the most spectacular sights in Britain.

Head for Snowdon and experience the highest mountain in England and Wales, either by camera or on foot if you can manage it. Spend mornings or afternoons in one of the many National Trust properties in the area, like Crich Castle, and rest weary feet and paws over a cup of tea in beautifully manicured gardens. Come home at night to your very own private hot tub before bed and more of the same tomorrow.
