Things To Do in Tynemouth, Nr Whitley Bay
Hidden in a back lane off the coastal road into Tynemouth, just half an hour’s drive from Newcastle upon Tyne. Walk down the lane and you’ll see the mile long stretch of sandy beach called Long Sands. Perfect for taking your furry friend out in the mornings, afternoons or evenings.
If that’s too long, next door is Short Sands, or King Edward’s Bay as it’s also known. This quiet bay is overlooked by Tynemouth Priory and Castle, a dramatic English Heritage landmark at the mouth of the River Tyne. Take in the spectacular views from the castle moat, up the River or out into the open North Sea.
Cross the road and head up Front Street, which boasts lots of characterful pubs, independent shops and chic restaurants for romantic meals for two.
For more energetic strolls, try the England Coastal Route up to Whitley Bay and further north, or head up river on Hadrian’s Way. You’ll pass North Shields Fish Quay, which is home to restaurants with many cuisines, plus the traditional fish and chips, and plenty of dog friendly pubs and cafes.
A short drive north will take you to the historic coastline of Northumberland, with castles up to Holy Island, or inland to Alnwick Castle, scene of the mythical Hogwarts.
For culture, try the galleries and theatres in Newcastle upon Tyne and over in Gateshead, including the Sage and Theatre Royal. Soak up Newcastle’s famous party atmosphere if you’re in the mood, or spend a quiet evening by the beach.
Gull Cottage is a quiet hideaway perfect for a couple wanting to get away from it all. It’s secluded location and cosy mews feel give it a unique charm, which is enhanced by the historic setting of Tynemouth.
Award winning sandy beaches are literally on your doorstep, so you’ll have plenty of opportunities to take yourselves and canine companion out for some fresh air. There are lots of heritage sites to see in the area, plus everything a holidaying couple could need, including shops, pubs and restaurants, all within yards of your front door.
More stunning coastline and scenery lies a short drive away, either north on the Northumbrian Coast, or west up the River Tyne into North Shields, Newcastle and Gateshead. Come home in the evening to a holiday cottage full of character in a truly unique setting.
