Nestling in the grounds of the owner’s estate, this detached cottage is perfect to get away from it all, while being near to historic and cultural attractions. Enjoy a quiet breakfast in your own sitting out area, then head off down the country lanes into County Durham. Head east across the open countryside to the village of Lanchester, where you’ll find lots of dog friendly places to stop for a drink and a bite to eat. Lanchester is a very popular village, with its proximity to the City of Durham.
Head west across the A68 from the cottage, and you’re in the Derwent Gorge and Muggleswick Woods National Nature Reserve. There are miles of quiet paths passing through peaceful woodland, and the Reserve is part of the much bigger North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The AONB is home to many lovely villages as well as natural splendour, so you’re never far from somewhere to enjoy a rest.
Take a drive to Durham and enjoy the city’s culture and history, including the World Heritage Site of Durham Cathedral. County Durham has hundreds of miles of paths, cycle and bridleways, courtesy of the waggonways from its mining heritage, and the dog friendly Derwent Valley Railway Path is a particularly beautiful way to explore the county.
Slightly further afield, there are both Teesdale and Weardale, which offer views and walks as beautiful as anywhere in England. Durham Cricket Club is nearby, with its historic Lumley Castle overlooking the pitch. Just in case you you need a fix of city living, culture and a bit of a party, Newcastle upon Tyne, Gateshead and Sunderland are all a half hour’s drive away.
Sycamore Cottage is an ideal, detached stone cottage in its own space, and part of private grounds where you’ll be away from the stresses of the modern world, while also never far from help. Private parking for two cars behind your own five bar gate are a great start to a peaceful holiday in the country. The cottage is lit the natural way, thanks to big windows and skylight, and you also have the pleasure of a wood burner in its own heart and chimney breast.
You might not feel like moving far, but if you do, there is a host of natural beauty, history and culture on your doorstep. There are river valleys and woodlands to explore with pooch at your side, plus friendly villages and towns all across the area. Sycamore Cottage is a great place to stay, and a perfect base to enjoy this special part of England.
