Things To Do in Morpeth, Northumberland
Located in a quiet street in the centre of the historic market town of Morpeth, within easy reach of Newcastle upon Tyne and the Northumberland coast and countryside.
Morpeth is blessed with hundreds of pubs, cafes, tea rooms and independent shops, plus bigger retailers and supermarkets if you need to stock up on the basics. You enter Morpeth through a stone gateway, part of the original town wall, the main street has a clock tower at the end of it, and is lined with restaurants with menus from all over the world.
The River Wansbeck winds around the town centre, and you can take your furry friend for long walks along the river banks, or hire a rowing boat to explore the river that way. Try the stepping stones if you’re feeling brave.
Morpeth is a bustling market town, and has excellent road and rail links in all directions. Take a short drive on the minor roads and discover the local Northumbrian villages. To the west lies the National Trust property at Wallington, a stately home in acres of grounds, with a unique collection of Pre-Raphaelite paintings.
Just slightly further inland is the edge of the Northumberland National Park, which has everything you’ll need for a day out in the countryside. Follow the signs and you’ll see Kielder Forest and reservoir, on the Scottish border.
To the east is the Northumberland Heritage Coast and AONB, with miles of beaches, clifftop walks and historic castles. Alnwick is a short drive up the A1, with its beautiful castle (Hogwarts) and lots of dog friendly visitor attractions.
The Carriage House is a lovely getaway for a couple, with lots of options for the daytime and evenings alike. The house itself is beautifully appointed, so you’ll feel right at home, while the lovely Northumbrian county town of Morpeth is right on your doorstep.
You can find everything you need here, from candlelit dinners to riverside walks, retail therapy and historic sites. There is a mainline train station, which takes you north east to the coastal town of Alnmouth or south to Newcastle upon Tyne.
The surrounding countryside is stunning, with a National Park to the west and an AONB to the east, so you and your canine companion can enjoy all the walks and adventures you like through the day. With such a central location, The Carriage House means your break can be whatever you want it to be.
