Things To Do in Alnwick
Alnwick is a fabulous place to explore with a wide range of local shops, pubs, a cinema and restaurants to choose from. The famous Keep Calm and Carry On poster was found in the town’s book shop, Barter Books, a hive of literary treasures.
Watch the model train as it bustles between the rooms with row upon row of books or sit back in the bookshop’s café with a slice of cake, a cup of coffee or tea and some time to decide which books to take home with you.
Elsewhere in Alnwick, a fairytale setting for dinner awaits at The Alnwick Garden which has a restaurant within a treehouse, perfect for a unique meal with fabulous cocktails also available.
Alnwick Castle is an absolute must-visit for Harry Potter and Downton Abbey fans who might recognise it in another format as Brancaster Castle and Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
The castle is still home to the Percy family, as it has been for over 700 years. It is open to the public for visits and holds regular events from musical evenings to wizardry workshops.
For a walk on the beach along this beautiful Heritage coastline, head to Alnmouth. The soft, golden sands of this beach are popular with four-legged friends who can run around to their heart’s content as you breathe in the fresh air and take in the views along this stunning coastline.
The beach is backed by sand dunes which are also home to wildlife and birds. Once an important grain port, the village was changed forever on Christmas Eve in 1806 when a ferocious storm changed the course of the River Aln which ran through the village, blocking off the harbour from the village.
The Alnmouth Arts Festival takes place every summer and is popular with locals and tourists alike. The festival highlights local textiles, artwork, pottery, jewellery, crafts and food which can be purchased during the festival which also has live music.
A cosy cottage for a relaxing break, 1¾ Denwick View is the perfect bolthole for a getaway for two in Alnwick, with easy access to the beach at Alnmouth, Seahouses and Bamburgh and its famous castle ruins.
