Things To Do in Kielder
The Left Luggage Office is a holiday cottage like no other. One of three holiday homes converted from an old train station, the original stone building is just right for a couple with one or two furry friends.
Front and rear gardens are perfect for a morning stretch, and they open onto some superb local countryside. The village of Falstone sits just next to Kielder Water, in the National Trust’s Northumberland National Park. The old train station used to be the last – or first – one in England, as the Scottish border is only 8 miles away.
Kielder Water itself is host to all sorts of energetic activities, some of which you can do with your four legged friend or friends. There are loads of signposted walks, trails and bridleways across the National Park, many around the banks of the great reservoir itself. This huge stretch of water also has plenty of water sports and activities in, on and around it. There is the famous Riverside Path, which is perfect for a walk with the dogs. Along this route is the gravestone showing a girl holding hands with a skeleton.
This air of spookiness is quite apt for Kielder. It is one of the darkest places in Europe, and is home to the Dark Sky Park. This is run by the Kielder Observatory Astronomical Society, which offers a range of activities to do in the night time. Through the day, you and your furry friends can enjoy some of the country life of the area, which has scores of working farms.
Close by is the Northumbrian village of Bellingham, which sits at the confluence of the Hareshaw Burn and The River North Tyne. This beautiful settlement has plenty of places to stock up on provisions, and is surrounded by some amazing countryside, complete with plenty of walks for you and your furry friends. The Pennine Way passes straight through the village. There are also some lovely country pubs, tea rooms and eateries to enjoy while you’re there.
The Left Luggage Office is the perfect place for a romantic break. As well as the romance of the countryside, the cottage takes you back to a previous era, when steam trains passed through the village.
Situated in the heart of Kielder, there is much nature to explore, and plenty to tire out your furry friends if you have them.
Both day and night are well catered for in this part of the country, with the many quaint villages and thriving market towns that are close by.
