Things To Do in Greenhead
Hadrian’s Wall is within both walking and driving distance of the cottage. One of Britain’s best-loved and most famous Roman sites, Hadrian’s Wall, Housesteads and Vindolanda offer a fascinating insight into life in the area during the Roman Empire.
The wall was built to truly place a divide between England and Scotland in cultural terms under the Roman Empire and not geographically and there are 73 miles of the wall still standing today, to walk along or alongside, depending on your walking and balance skills.
Visit the museums at Vindolanda and Housesteads to journey back through time to Roman Britain and life in a military town. See Roman coins, stunning panoramic views, the remains of the granaries and hospital as well as fortifications.
Discover Carlisle where you can visit the 900 year old castle and cathedral and Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery, an award-winning place to see fine and decorative art, human history and natural sciences, all under one roof.
Carlisle Cathedral was founded in 1122 and has been rebuilt several times to its current glory. Entry is free and there are volunteer guides to help you to enjoy your time there to the fullest. Carlisle Castle was built in 1092 by William Rufus and has always been a strategic building in the history of both England and Scotland over the centuries.
Visit the castle’s dungeons, enjoy a visit to Cumbria’s Museum of Military Life and visit the castle turret in which Mary, Queen of Scots was held captive from 1568, by order of Queen Elizabeth I, her cousin. See beautiful carving steeped in history and the Warden’s apartment, a suite of rooms, which was once the bedroom of Richard III.
