Things To Do in Bellingham
Otterburn is in the Northumberland National Park, an area ideal for outdoor lovers. Hiking trails of different lengths and challenges can be found in the area and cycle paths are plentiful too.
Otterburn village is quiet and boasts a traditional pub and small local shop, handy for holiday essentials. An old textile mill on the road out of the village has been transformed into an outdoor clothing store with a popular café inside.
This part of Northumberland is a Dark Sky Area due to the low levels of light pollution. At night you can see countless stars, far more than you can usually see elsewhere.
The Kielder Observatory is positioned in the heart of a forest – this public facility can be visited in the evening if you have pre-booked a slot. Kielder Forest has lots of activities on offer during the daytime – there is archery, zip-lining, cycling and Segway tours to book.
The man-made lake in amongst the trees is the largest in Europe, and it’s a popular fishing spot.
Hadrian’s Wall is within easy reach and there is a pathway to walk that follows the length of it. Walk along a section and take in the beautiful countryside.
At Corbridge you can see the remains of a Roman town where soldiers once stopped to restock their supplies. A haul of relics is on display that allowed historians to learn about what went on here.
Head to the coast and spend a day in the Druridge Bay Country Park. There are 7 miles of sandy beaches stretching from Amble to Cresswell. The coast here rarely becomes overcrowded and it’s a popular spot with dog walkers.
The lively city of Newcastle-upon-Tyne is around 30 minutes away. Walk along the river and under the Tyne Bridge, visit the huge shopping mall and spend time in the cathedral and castle.
