Things To Do in Twiston
Nestling in rugged countryside on the borders of Lancashire and Yorkshire, near the village of Twiston in the Forest of Bowland Area of Natural Beauty (AONB).
Take a break with friends or family in this unique corner of England, enjoying peaceful walks with your furry friend for company. Start off down the track at the bottom of the garden, and remember to shut the gate. Explore the owner’s 15 acres of reclaimed farm land, planted with hedgerows and trees to encourage wildlife and diversity.
Set off on one of the many paths and bridleways which criss cross the area, or pick up one of the brooks which join the nearby River Ribble.
The Yorkshire Dales are to the east, and the Ribble Valley to the west, snaking all the way to the Irish Sea. The major Lancashire towns of Blackburn and Preston are a short drive away, where you can stock up on anything you need, or head for a night out.
A brisk doggie walk in any direction takes you to lovely local villages, with Twiston being the closest, Downham to the west and Barley to the south. Pendle Hill dominates the whole area, and can be accessed by a number of paths; although you and pooch will have to be fit to climb it.
The villages and surrounding land are in the Forest of Bowland AONB, which surrounds the town of Clitheroe. In the town you’ll find dog friendly cafes, pubs and eateries, plus independent shops and Clitheroe Market, which sells local produce and arts and crafts which are famous in the area.
Visit Clitheroe Castle, perched high over the town, take in the views all around and maybe try to find your way through the Castle Maze.
Throstle Hall Cottage is a unique getaway for couples, family, groups of friends or work colleagues. Its “upside down” design gives spectacular views from the living area, which is on the first floor.
It also has the comfort of a wood burner and a big fireside rug, so you might be tempted to stay in a lot, although your canine companion will have other ideas.
The architect designed glass walls have some truly spectacular views, which fido will be very keen to explore up close. Pendle Hill is there on your doorstep, presenting a challenge but offering spectacular views of the Yorkshire Dales and the Ribble Valley.
Visit the local villages and enjoy some real old fashioned peace and quiet, or head off into Clitheroe for a great morning or afternoon out. With Blackburn and Preston nearby, you’re never too far from anything you might need while you’re away.
