Things To Do in Northallerton
Northallerton is on the edge of the North York Moors and within an easy drive of the Yorkshire Dales so it’s an ideal place for walkers. The town is bustling and has a choice of chain eateries as well as local cafes, takeways and tea rooms. There’s a market twice a week – held on Wednesdays and Saturdays – and a wide range of shops.
From the centre there are walking routes of different lengths, so you can choose a gentle stroll or long-distance hike.
The Coast to Coast walk passes close to Northallerton. It is the most popular trail in the UK and links St Bees Head on the Irish Sea coast with Robins Hood Bay on the east coast of Yorkshire. The total length is 190 miles, but it’s possible to enjoy a small part of it near Northallerton.
Mount Grace Priory, a National Trust property, is the most important charter house remaining in the UK. The ruins are spectacular with the cells clearly visible where monks once stayed in total solitude. Also on the site is a mansion house that dates back to the 13th century and a historical exhibition.
The priory can be reached on foot via a circular walk from Scarth Wood Moor to make the visit a complete day out.
There are countless pretty villages across the North York Moors, and one of the finest is Hutton le Hole. There’s a stream running through the middle, and there are craft workshops, artisan showrooms and a folk museum that visitors enjoy.
A pleasant 4-mile walking route takes ramblers to Lastingham and back. The views along the trail are beautiful and there’s a Norman church to spot along the way.
Pack your walking boots and head off for a holiday in the beautiful North York Moors. There are so many stunning places to hike, it’s difficult to know which route to choose first.
And after a long day out and about exploring, Gilson Cottage welcomes you back with open arms. The living room is modern and comfy, and with the wood burning fire, it is warm and inviting all year round.
The kitchen comes with all mod cons so whipping up a tasty evening meal is a breeze. And as your doggy is welcome to stay with you, the whole family can have a great holiday here.
