Things To Do in Bellerby
The Wensleydale Railway, a rural line operating diesel and steam services, is a great, sedate day out for you and your dog. You’ll pass through wooded areas and farmland and stop at village and market town stations.
You can embark at Leyburn, which is just more than a half hour walk from Bellerby. The station at Leyburn has been restored entirely by volunteers.
You’ll be able to take in Leyburn Shawl, a steep slope, which you could venture taking your pooch on a bracing walk on another day, and enjoy the spectacular views of Wensleydale.
According to legend, the Shawl is so called because Mary Queen of Scots was supposed to have dropped her shawl on the footpath when she tried to escape Castle Bolton, where Queen Elizabeth I was holding her prisoner.
If you are a keen gardener a visit to Constable Burton Gardens is a must. Just two miles out of Leyburn this colourful location is guaranteed to inspire you and a bonus is that welcomes dogs. In April there is a daffodil exhibition and in May there are more than 6 000 tulips on display.
There are more than a few walking trails in and around Leyburn, going from every direction from the town centre. A firm favourite is the seven-mile circular walk, starting on the Shawl and taking you though fields and woods and over streams. You can be assured of panoramic views of the rolling Wensleydale towards Penhill and the Coverdale Fells.
Back in Leyburn, there’s the delightful family-owned supermarket Campbells, which dates started out in 1868. Here you can stock up on doggie treats and some award-winning wine for a quiet night in. Leyburn is home to Hannah Russell, author of Little Alf, a true story of a pint-sized pony.
Visit Hannah’s shop where you can see Quirky Cow artwork too. Next door is Lynn Ward’s studio in Golden Lion. Yard. Lynn’s main inspiration is the breath taking Wensleydale landscapes. Lynn also undertakes private commissions, so why not have your pooch’s portrait painted by this renowned Yorkshire artist?
Visit The Teapottery, now called Ceramic Inspirations. From the viewing area you can watch our skilled potters as they make each piece from scratch. You can see every stage of the process from slip casting to intricate hand painting and glazing.
Attention to detail is what this little cottage is all about – everything from the stylish interior to the welcome hamper that doesn’t forget to include your four-legged family member.
There is just so much to see and do within striking distance of High Dale.
